TENNEY: POSTAL PIECES

Guest
Klang Systematiek and PMP Ensemble

Organized by Prague Music Performance

Embark on a musical journey as we celebrate the profound legacy of James Tenney (1934-2006), an influential American composer who defied categorization. His output skirts into (and often combines) computer music, indeterminacy, generative systems, chance, microtonality, minimalism, synthesis, tape-music, and on. In other words, all the key approaches used by the avant-garde composers throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Tenney collaborated with John Cage, Philip Glass, Harry Partch, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and many others. Delve into the rich tapestry of Tenney's compositions, from indeterminacy to microtonality, and experience the vast range of his creativity. This event is a celebration of a composer who embraced diversity, broke barriers, and left an enduring mark on avant-garde music.

The Czech premiere of Postal Pieces, which Tenney called „Scorecards“ are a remarkable series of 11 works printed on postcards. Each card features a complete work to be performed by the instrumentalists. These pieces reflect to a large extent some of Tenney's primary compositional ideas. Each is a meditation of sorts on acoustics, form, and hyper-attention to a single gesture.

For this project, two international ensembles will join their efforts - Klang Systematiek and PMP Ensemble, whose members include Gareth Davis, Dario Calderone, Elia Moretti, Roxana Hädler, and others.
